Victorian England, when the Gothic revival happened Gothic buildings inspired musicians to write dark classical music. Even parts of England it was " well to do" to dress in black. It was the attitude towards death.
About this music it has an "misteryous sound" and a "church-like" choir... These are elements of gothic... but Gregorian is not Gothic.
