Féval, Paul (Francia) - La Ciudad Vampiro

La Oscuridad como única compañia.

Cuando nuestros dos espíritus se alzan firmes,
cara a cara,
silenciosos,
plasmando intimidades,
hasta que la extensión de nuestras alas se quiebra,
lacerando cada recodo,
quemando cada curva.
Entonces
¿qué amargura de la tierra puede opacarnos
sin que en el otro encontremos eterno consuelo?
Piensa que,
escalando alto,
los demás ángeles nos contemplan;
deseando derramar una dorada,
una perfecta melodía
sobre nuestro abismal y querido silencio.
Demoremos nuestros pasos por el mundo, amada mía;

The Dark Side of the Force

Dark Shadows by Tim Burton

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive. Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles. Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Vibrant rhythms: Tribute to Hossam Ramzy & Phil Thornton

The most beautiful sensual music that exists...
Egypt breathing..
is as if time had not elapsed.
A real time capsule.
I've been twice in Egypt.
My mother is a researcher in ancient languages, including hieroglyphics.
I inherited my mother's passion for Ancient Egypt, supreme civilization.

This is my little tribute to a fascinating and vibrant rhythms.

Immortal Egypt

At the Gates of the Citadel

Ramzy was born into a wealthy Cairo family. He began playing the darbuka and tabla at an early age. He moved to Saudi Arabia for a time and learned traditional Bedouin music styles. In the 1970s he moved to London and began playing with saxophonist Andy Sheppard. His collaborations with jazz musicians earned him the nickname "The Sultan of Swing". In 1989 he worked with Peter Gabriel on the soundtrack to Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ. This brought him to the attention of artists such as Frank Asher and the Gipsy Kings.
In 1994 he returned to his roots and formed a ten piece Egyptian ensemble that performed on the album No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded. Ramzy and his ensemble also gained exposure by touring with Plant and Page throughout 1995 in support of their album. The next year Ramzy released the first of three collaborations with English arranger Phil Thornton, Eternal Egypt. The success of Eternal Egypt's blend of Arabic music prompted the follow up albums Immortal Egypt and Enchanted Egypt. In 1998, he performed with Rachid Taha, Khaled and Faudel at their 1,2,3 Soleils concert and backed Khaled again for the Claude Challe album Flying Carpet.
In 2000, Jay-Z sampled his version of "Khosara" for "Big Pimpin'". After 2000 Ramzy increasingly began to work arranging music for pop stars. In 2005 he arranged some songs for Ricky Martin's album Life and he worked with Shakira on her album She Wolf. He also contributed two songs to the soundtrack for the film Prince of Persia and one to the soundtrack for Conan The Barbarian.
His latest album released on 30 August 2011. Entitled Rock the Tabla, it features Indian composer A.R. Rahman, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, Manu Katché and Billy Cobham.

Hossam Ramzy and Phil Thornton discuss their upcoming new release for 2011, tentatively entitled "Egypt Unveiled". This is to be the fourth instalment in the popular series, picking up where 2005's "Enchanted Egypt" left off.

Vampire Mythology: Dark Reflections

Vampire Mythology

Vampire mythology is as old as recorded time, and stems from many cultures, from ancient Greece, to the early Hebrews, to Asia, to the indigenous cultures of the Americas. The most primal elements of Man’s deepest fears and longings… and of life itself are embodied in the vampire.

Blood

Blood, the stuff of life to which even the most primitive of cultures ascribed mystical healing powers which gave rise to millennia of dark, sacrificial rituals and belief in witchcraft which used blood as its source of power. Our fear of the dark and of nightly predators, a fear written into the genes of our remotest pre-human ancestors.

Sex

Sex. Our most primal drive and greatest fear, manifesting in dark visions of demonic temptresses and succubi who lure with irresistible promise, then steal life, health and vigor. Vampires, in whichever of many forms they’ve taken over the ages, have often fed on unborn children. Our fear of failure and our hunger for the dark nightly temptations and deceptive illusions behind which they hide, intertwine in vampire myth.

Death

And, of course, the darkest fear of all: death. Our rational minds acknowledge its inevitability, yet our instinct for survival cannot allow us to accept it. Down through the ages, many cultures have fearfully exhumed the bodies of their dead, cremating or dismembering them in fear of their return. Our nightmares abound with visions of the dead rising from their graves to enviously feed on the blood of the living. Yet, a part of us secretly longs to be turned by such creatures, to cheat death as they have and live forever. A part of us envies the vampire for his immortality, and his dark predatory power.

And yet, a part of the vampire envies us for the brief treasures of life now eternally denied him. He walks the night forever, neither dead nor alive, fearing the light of day and coveting it at the same time. The brief rush of warm human blood through his cold veins allows but a fleeting moment of the glorious power of life now only dimly recalled as the barren centuries slip by. The immortal imprisoned in dark, changeless forever envies the brief and fragile mortal, as the mortal simultaneously envies him. Perhaps the vampire casts no reflection because he is a reflection. Of us. And, we of him. He is the reflection of our fears and dark, secret desires. We are the reflection of the life he craves. His deepest craving is peace. The peace of sweet, liberating death as symbolized in the crucifix, which he simultaneously fears and covets.

Conclusion

Mythology often depicts the dead rising as vampires as punishment for the sins and shortcomings of their lives. The hell we create for ourselves comes back to haunt us for eternity. We long to lay it back in its grave with a stake through its heart to still it forever. But, evil begets evil, and never dies. The dance of lures, lies and destruction between human and vampire defines the human condition of endlessly chasing the unattainable. The eternal chase can be a noble quest for a holy grail, or a dark nightly quest for revenge. Either way, the longing is as irresistible as blood hunger, and as eternal as waking death.

Gothic lyrics

I am the only one
who understands me
in my ebony dreams
why can't I be just like them
...happy

life is gone
beautiful, suffering
my eyes drown, in delusion

my body paled and cold, let the
silence bloom I never will arise
in your arms again

now, with her hand, she closed my eyes
and gave me the last kiss, her tears drip
in my pool of blood

but, I've died with a
smile, cause no one did really search the
tenderness which sleeped in me, no

why could I not feel the love which flows through
all of our souls it was the fear that I never could fall in it

but so I'm gone and no one can bring me back
now shed tears what you on earth never did for me

now, they weep on my grave
weep they all just for me
now, I'm sad about my mistake

why can't I return to earth, why?
there so many who loved me really
oh pain.

Invisible Children: Who is Joseph Kony?

By now, you've probably seen the Youtube video tagged Kony2012, or at least seen the #StopKony hastags on Twitter and links on Facebook posts.

A non-profit group called Invisible Children created the video about the Ugandan warlord. Overnight, it has turned Joseph Kony into a househould name in the United States, and raised concerns about his actions in Uganda. It has also raised questions about the non-profit group promoting the video. But according to Yahoo.com there is now a backlash to that backlash.

But who exactly is Joseph Kony?

Born in Uganda, Kony is the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army. For years, the rebel group kidnapped children in northern Uganda, using the boys as fighters for his movement and raping the girls.

It's estimated he's abducted 66,000 children and killed tens of thousands; often families of the kidnapped children.

NEWS: Somali Pirates Ready for Renewed Raiding Season

Since he was indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court in 2005 on 33 charges including murder, enslavement, rape, pillaging, and forced fighting, he has left Uganda for the bush; his whereabouts are unknown. The LRA now operates in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic, and may now number in the hundreds.

"Kony is a monster. He deserves to be prosecuted and hanged," Col. Felix Kulayigye, the spokesman for Uganda's military, told The Associated Press.

After the indictments, Kony came out of hiding, apparently to participate in a peace deal. But he backed out in 2008.

The L.R.A. is an off-shoot of a rebel group led by Alice Lakwena, who said spirits possessed her and led her to war, according to the New York Times. When Kony took over, he said he was the spirits' new channel.

Abductees who have escaped have said that Kony told them his battle instructions came from the Holy Spirit, according to the BBC. He's believed to have at least 60 wives.

The U.S. has worked with Ugandan and central African regional troops to divert the L.R.A. Those efforts probably helped scatter the group across central Africa.

Jolly Okot, the current Uganda country director for Invisible Children, was abducted in 1986 by the group that became the LRA when she was 18, and forced into sex.

The video highlights a former child soldier named Jacob, calling for action against the atrocities.

Native American Rights Fund: Tribute to Sacred Spirit

Sacred Spirit is a musical project by Claus Zundel, Ralf Hamm and Markus Staab. The music is of electronic, new age, world, ambient, house, jazz and blues genres. Sacred Spirit, with total worldwide album sales estimated to be over 15 million copies. For each Sacred Spirit album sold, a donation is made to the Native American Rights Fund, the non-profit American Indian organization devoting all its time to restoring the legal rights of the native American people.

Ly-O-Lay Ale Yoya

The first album - Chants and Dances of the Native Americans was released in 1994. The album was nominated for best New Age album Grammy award. In keeping with the Native American theme, Zundel adopted the pseudonym 'The Fearsome Brave', and on his many other projects he is simply credited as 'The Brave'. The music conveys the stories, legends and plight of the Native Americans by combining sampled chants of the Navajo, Pueblo and Sioux tribes and Sami people yoik with synthesizer backings, all driven forth by a combination of traditional drumming and electronic dance-beats. The first single released off the album was "Yeha-Noha" (Wishes of happiness and prosperity) which was largely responsible for catapulting Sacred Spirit into the limelight. The single reached #1 position in number of countries, including 6 weeks at #1 in France. In the US, "Yeha Noha" sung by Navajo elder Kee Chee Jake of Chinle, Arizona reached top 20 in Billboard Hot 100. The album is arguably one of the most successful enigmatic projects ever, garnering sales of more than 7 million albums worldwide. It reached top 10 and charted for twenty seven weeks in the UK Albums Chart.
A second album was released by Sacred Spirit, but it was a complete divergence from the original. The focus this time was around the blues singing of America. In keeping with the change of theme, the American release saw the group name also being changed, to Indigo Spirit.
Virgin Records released the third Sacred Spirit album in 2000. The album was nominated for best New Age Grammy award in 2001. This time the project's name was slightly altered to Indians' Sacred Spirit (and in some areas even that was abbreviated to Indians' Spirit), probably to inform listeners that it was different from the second album. The subtitle is More Chants and Dances of the Native Americans. The album continues the mood and production of the first, influential album. However the album is distinctly more instrumental. Although all the tracks do feature chants or speech, each song is composed of many short samples pieced together, unlike the first album which tended to use one extended sample per song.
In 2003 two Sacred Spirit albums were released on Higher Octave music label. The first one - Jazzy Chill Out features the vocal samples by legendary blues masters Lightnin' Hopkins and John Lee Hooker, in addition to tracks spiced with the warm, inviting tones of Anita O'Day and Ella Fitzgerald. The vintage vocal touch adds an extra emotional resonance to the cutting edge texturing of The Brave’s innovative sonics with the jazzy piano melodies and improvisations of Eric Harmsen. Harmsen’s ensemble—including a DJ, rapper, drummer and vocalist—performs regularly at the club Teatro Perera on Ibiza island off the coast of Spain where The Brave makes his home.
On the other 2003 album - Bluesy Chill Out Zundel collaborated with fellow Ibiza resident Dave “BK” Jeffs, a Northern Ireland native and former street musician who plays regularly at a local club named Teatro Perera. Each track was created organically, with Jeffs (who also sings and plays flute and harmonica) composing improvisational slide and steel guitar riffs as a foundation for The Brave to build his trademark synthesis upon.
“I wanted to create a contemporary recording which would draw on classic blues traditions but combine them with the Sacred Spirit tradition of chill out groove and ambience,” said Claus Zundel. His goal was to offer a fresh perspective on the blues, thereby, as he said, “dragging it out of the ghetto” of the past and into the present.
