German Expressionism: Der Golem (1920)

From the 1920 Paul Wegener silent German classic. Original score composed by John Battema.

The classic 1920 German expressionist black and white horror film "The Golem" gets a new soundtrack by Hollywood composer Carvin Knowles in this original JewishJournal.com video.

Carvin Knowles writes:

In the 16th Century CE Rabbi Judah Loew was said to have created a powerful Golem to defend Prague's Jewish ghetto.

Although I composed this segment of of score for the scene in Paul Wegener's 1920 prequel to his silent Golem series in the summer of 2002, I only recorded it during the last weekend of October in 2007.

I played all the brass and woodwinds myself, including the oboe solo near the beginning and the gong, all in my small Hollywood apartment.

In this scene, Rabbi Loew summons the Sumerian demon Astaroth to learn the word that will bring the Golem to life -- rendered in the most arcane transliteration from Hebrew that I have ever seen, the word is "Aemath" meaning 'emet' (Hebrew)' or 'truth.' I had imagined Rabbi Loew reciting the Shema to hold the ancient demon at bay.

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by Der Golem, the great Jewish monster of clay who only comes to life when Truth is in his breast (or on his tongue, in the original text).

Whether it is the silent film or the Hammer horror version or even Mozart's "Don Giovanni" (which, incidentally, had it's premier in Prague), the living statue has always terrified and thrilled me.

Legendary gothic bands: The Sister of Mercy

"Marian"
Film. "Underworld"

"Bury me Deep"

Lyrics

Call it superstition
Followed and fell
Under the falling
Under the spell
Singing
Bury me
Bury me
Spoken in tongues
Of many colours, in the
Colours of heaven, in the colours of hell, in the
Cannot, would not tell, in the
Broken temple bells, in the ringing
Oh, Marian, I can
Hear those voices singing
Bury me
Inside
Lie beside and
Bury me
Deep
In the spoken in tongues
Cover me over
Unsung
Unsaid, not
Borrowed, broken and torn,
On the bed tomorrow, mourning
Before you sleep
Bury me deep
Bury me
Inside
Lie beside and
Bury me, bury me, bury me, bury me
Deep
Call it superstition
Followed and fell
Under the falling
Under the spell
Bury me
Inside
Lie beside and
Bury me
Deep

"1959"

Lyrics

Living as an angel in the
Place that I was born
Living on air
Living in heaven
Giving the lie down, the line
To the
There's my heaven

And I know
Which way the wind blows
In nineteen fifty-nine

Which way the wind blows
In nineteen fifty-nine

And the wind blows still
And the wind blows wild again
For a little child an never kill this clean
This way
And it feels like me today
Tell me
Do you feel the same?
Isabelle?
Or do you feel like nineteen fifty-nine?
...do you feel like nineteen fifty-nine?

And the wind blows wild again
And the wind blows wild

In nineteen fifty-nine
In fifty-nine
Isabelle
Do you, do you fell the same?

Come with me
Like a little child
Like another gun
Like homeless, restless, known to none, like
Way beyond the line
Like it never was
In nineteen fifty-nine.

Tristania: A Sequel of Decay

Checkered by the dawn,

enslaved in life enthralling
Swept up by the mortal waste of my enslaved emotion
Agents of the cross in argentine frailty
Hopefully you'll stop him and delay the conquering angina
Hopefully you'll stop him and delay the conquering...
In decadence I take thee by the hand
too frail...
to gain the promised land
too frail...
to take your pain away
too frail...
a sequel of decay.

Tribute to Dark City

Trevor Jones composed most of the music for this movie.

Dark City is a 1998 film written and directed by Alex Proyas. Although not a blockbuster, the film is a landmark in the fantasy film for adults to tackle complex subjects in an imaginative and aesthetically original, although he does combining genres as disparate as black cinema and expressionism; with pieces cyberpunk.

Works possibly inspired by Dark City:

Comparisons have been made between Dark City's villain Mr. Hand and the villain from the Matrix Trilogy, Agent Smith. Both are enforcers for the film's antagonists (the Strangers/the Machines), but both are somehow different from their otherwise homogeneous fellows. Both develop a bond with their human opponent (Hand through Murdoch's memories, Smith through Neo's code), which causes them to become more human and to develop some of humanity's worst characteristics. Subsequent movies in the Matrix Trilogy further this comparison, as the climactic fight scene in Dark City is not unlike the one seen in Revolutions.

Nor do the comparisons end there; both Matrix and Dark City concern artificial memories and habitats, and both are patrolled by faceless superpowered beings challenged when a human develops comparable powers. Comparisons have been made between scenes from the movies, making note of similarities in both cinematography and atmosphere.Template:Ref

The Animatrix short story A Detective Story is remarkably similar to Bumstead's story arc in Dark City. In the short story, a detective is pursuing an enigmatic figure (Trinity, who like Murdoch is an "enlightened" human with knowledge of the false nature of their reality). Over the course of the investigation he learns that the previous investigators went insane or disappeared. In the end, the detective catches up with his target and learns the true nature of his world, only to die shortly thereafter.

The overlying plot of the anime The Big O also features an isolated, noir-esque city, where virtually everyone suffers from amnesia, people possess memories that are not their own, and in the end it is revealed that the city is apparently some sort of experiment, ending and resetting itself every forty years.

Machinae Supremacy: Dark City

I can feel the fire deep inside, it's burning brighter
We burn a raised fist and my pride,
I sway
to the beat of our decay, the horsemen on their way
And in this mob a crescent line to hide behind
Here in and of the dark, our city, it's streets and walls
Here we live, we are, inside our homes and malls

I walk across the dead train yard,
remembering who we are
I look inside and in my heart,
we're never far apart

I can see the mountain over me, the Serpent Hollow
The silent fortress underneath,
I sway
to the beat of our decay, the light of other days
And fireshide the black island, the toxic sand
Dancing city lights glowing against the sky
Snowing, shimmering, shinedust in our eyes

I walk across the dead train yard,
remembering who we are
I look inside and in my heart,
we're never far apart

And in the yellow belvedere
I carve my name without fear
A witness to the birth of me,
This garden of concrete

I walk across the dead train yard,
remembering who we are.
I look inside and in my heart,
we're never far apart

And in the yellow belvedere
I carve my name without fear
A witness to the birth of me
This garden of concrete.

L'autre Monde
Dark Sanctuary

In the darkness, I'm looking for your voice to guide me, to enlight my horizon. That is the life that was given to me, i'm bound to roam in the shadows for ever. But sometimes i long for some pleasure, moments of happiness, some aims for my life. But i remain alone, deep in thoughts, my universe is definitly closed. Listen to me, hear me, the voice that is calling you is mine!

Funeral Cry

Oh, death, come and take my breath
Look the tears on my face
I want to burn in fire
This is my last desire.
There is nothing you can say
To block my bloody way
I have reached my last day
Now it is time to pay.

The Philosophy of Time Travel, by Roberta Sparrow

Philosophy of time travel is a fictional book (1944) Donnie Darkoreading at the behest of Frank, to take him to correct the natural order of things in the lives of those around him. It has a few pagesand actually only contributes to dwell more on the mystery of the film.
Foreword

I would like to thank the sisters of the Saint JohnChapter in Alexandria, Virginia for their support (in my decision).

By the grace of God, they are:
Sister Eleance Lewis
Sister Francesca Godard
Sister Helen Davis
Sister Catherine (Arnold)
Sister Mary Lee Pond Sister Virginia (Weaver).
...This intent(?) of this short book is for it to be used as asimple and direct guide in a time of great danger.
I pray that this is merely a work of fiction.
If it is not, then I pray for you, the reader of this book....
.If I am still alive when the eventsforetold in these pages occur, then I hope that youwill find me before it is too late.

Chapter One

The Tangent Universe

....The Primary Universe is fraught with great peril.
War, plague, famine and natural disaster are common.
Death comes to us all..
...The Fourth Dimension of Time is a stable construct, though it is not impenetrable...
..Incidents when the fabric of the fourth dimension becomes corrupted are incredibly rare...
..If a Tangent Universe occurs, it will be highly unstable, sustaining itself for no longer than several weeks...
..Eventually it will collapse upon itself, forming a black hole within the Primary Universe capable of destroying all existence.

Chapter Two

Water And Metal

Water and Metal are the key elements of Time Travel.k..
..Water is the barrier element for the construction of Time Portals used as gateways between Universes at the Tangent  Vortex....

.Metal is the (transitional) element for the construction of Artifact Vessels.

Chapter Four

The Artifact And The Living

....When a Tangent Universe occurs, those living nearest to the Vortex will find themselves at the epicenter of a dangerous new world...
..Artifacts provide the first sign that a Tangent Universe has occurred...
..If an Artifact occurs, the Living will retrieve it with great interest and curiosity.
Artifacts are formed from metal, such as an Arrowhead from an ancient Mayan civilization, or a Metal Sword from Medieval Europe...
..Artifacts returned to the Primary Universe are often linked to religious iconography; as their appearance on Earth seems to defy logical explanation..
...Divine Intervention is deemed the only logical conclusion for the appearance of the Artifact.

Chapter Six
The Living Receiver
....The Living Receiver is chosen to guide the Artifact
into position for it's journey back to the Primary Universe.
No one knows how or why a Receiver will be chosen.
....The Living Receiver is often (blessed) with a Fourth
Dimensional Power(s). These include increased strength,
telekinesis, mind control, and the ability to conjure
fire and water.
....The Living Receiver is often tormented by terrifying
dreams, visions and auditory hallucinations during his
time within the Tangent Universe.
....Those surrounding the Living Receiver, known as the

Chapter Seven

The Manipulated
Living

....The Manipulated Living are often the close friends and neighbors of the Living Receiver. ..
..They are prone to irrational, bizarre, and often violent behavior.
This is the unfortunate result of their task, which is to assist the Living Receiver in returning the Artifact to the Primary Universe. ...
.The Manipulated Living will do anything to save themselves from Oblivion.

Chapter Ten

The Manipulated
Dead
....The Manipulated Dead are more powerful than the
Living Receiver. If a person dies within the Tangent
Dimension, they are able to contact the Living
Receiver through the Fourth Dimensional Construct.
The Fourth Dimensional Construct is made of Water.
....The Manipulated Dead will manipulate the Living
Receiver using the Fourth Dimensional Construct (see
Appendix A and B).
....The Manipulated Dead will often set an Ensurance
Trap for the Living Receiver to ensure that the Artifact
is returned safely to the Primary Universe.
....If the Ensurance Trap is successful, the Living
Receiver is left with no choice but to use his Fourth
Dimensional Power to send the Artifact back in time
into the Primary Universe before the Black Hole
collapses upon itself.

Chapter Twelve

Dreams
....When the Manipulated awakens from their Journey
into the Tangent Universe, they are often haunted by
the experience in their dreams.
Many of them will not remember.
....Those who do remember the Journey are often over-
come with profound remorse for the regretful actions
buried within their Dreams, the only physical evidence
buried within the Artifact itself, all that remains from
the lost world.
....Ancient myth tells us of the Mayan Warrior killed
by an Arrowhead that had fallen from a cliff, where
there was no Army, no enemy to be found.
....We are told of the Medieval Knight mysteriously
impaled by the sword he had not yet built.
We are told that these things occur for a reason.

Letter:
Dear Roberta Sparrow,
I finished your book and I have so many questions to ask you.
Sometimes I fear what I going to say. Sometimes I have fear thatthis is not a work of fiction. I just hope that the answers come to mein the dream.
I hope that when the world runs out, can breathe a sigh of relief, because there is much to see in the future.
